Abdominal Obesity.... A Persistent Epidermic

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health. People are generally considered obese when their Body Mass Index (BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a person’s weight by the square of the person’s height, is above 30.
Abdominal obesity is the type of obesity that occurs when the abdomen of an individual protrudes forward beyond the normal body alignment due to the accumulation of fat.
Abdominal obesity occurs when food being consumed by an individual, cannot be digested quickly and as a result accumulates in the abdominal region and gets stored as fat.
In our world today, we find that 1 in every 10 families has a member suffering from abdominal obesity and this can be very embarrassing especially when one is being colloquially called “POT BELLY”
This condition has been embraced in the society such that people tend to forget that it’s an anormally to the extent that a pot bellied man is considered a rich person.
Nevertheless, this is a serious condition and can lead to serious chronic diseases such as :
• Diabetes mellitus
• Hypertension
• Cancer
• Arthritis
Abdominal obesity is being caused by a variety of factors such as:
• Drinking excessive Alcohol
• Smoking
• Drugs
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Chronic night food eating
              Treatment /Management
This can be approached in two ways :
• Pharmacological
• Non Pharmacological

               Pharmacological Approach
This is done with weight management drugs such as
Orlistat 120mg three times daily
Chromium picolinate

              Non Pharmacological Approach
This approach is the best approach and it involves

  1. Exercise:This  includes ;
  • Push ups early in the morning before breakfast
  • Use of step counters which help determine the number of steps made in a day
  •         Trying to burn the number of calories you consume in a day helps to avoid Abdominal obesity.
2.        Avoid excess alcohol:Alcohol reduces the metabolism of fat and thus leads to accumulation in the abdomen. Thus it should be reduced as much as possible… At least 33cl per day is okay for those that can’t do without it.
3.       Avoid Sedentary lifestyle:Sitting too much or not being active in a day will worsen Abdominal obesity…
4.      Avoid late night food :This is one of the main causes. Late night food especially when one eats then immediately goes to sleep won’t give the body time to digest the food and this accumulates in the abdomen. This can be remedied by eating 4hours before bedtime.
5. Decrease in sugar intake:Sugar intake also contributes to this because when one eats the body utilizes the sugar and continuous eating makes the body to release insulin which stores it as glycogen… subsequent eating fills up the stores and then the body begins to store them as fat and thus leading to Abdominal obesity…. Reduction of sugar intake saves the body the stress.
6.     Maintaining a healthy weight :This can be achieved by checking your BMI and any value higher than 30 is bad for your health.

HOW DOES CIGARETTES AFFECT THE SPERM

Both men and women should consider smoking cessation if they’re trying to conceive.  A new study published in BJU International found that cigarette smoking is associated with inflammation in men’s accessory glands and testis, which leads to altered sperm quality. The take-home message for pharmacists and patients is that smoking can alter sperm in a way that makes it harder for fertilization to occur. “Men who smoke produce a semen that has an inflammatory profile [and] sperm with many cellular alterations—mainly higher DNA damage, alteration in energy production, and lower capacity to fertilize oocytes,” lead study author Ricardo P. Bertolla, DVM, PhD, MBA, of Sao Paulo Federal University, told Pharmacy Times.  Although the study took place in Brazil, Dr. Bertolla said he saw no reason the study group would have singularities based on the geographic location.  “This is definitely something that applies to men in the United States,” he said.  ...
