Treatment of sore throat includes;
• Demulcents(e.g. strepsil)
• Antibiotics(e.g. Cefuroxime)
• Local anesthetics(e.g. benzocaine)
• Analgesics (e.g. Ibuprofen).
Co-trimoxazole is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of drugs called Sulfonamides. This drug, being one of the most abused antibiotic in the world, is usually taken for treatment of sore throat.
Septrin,which is a common brand of the drug, is associated with Immunosuppression which can eventually cause Agranulocytosis(condition in which the bone marrow doesn’t make enough neutrophils). Immunosuppression is one of the core causes of sore throat . This explains the reason why sore throat comes as one of the common symptoms in patients diagnosed with malaria, since malaria causes Immunosuppression.
Thus, Co-trimoxazole shouldn’t be used as first choice treatment of sore throat . Other Antibiotics that can be used include: cefuroxime, amoxicillin, azithromycin,etc.
